While the tongue has power to give life, James says it is also “full of deadly poison” (James 3:8). It is “a little member [of the body],” but it “boasts great things,” “defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell” (James 3: 5-6). The instrument that makes us unique from all other created things—speech—is also the thing that makes us brute-like in our interactions. That’s a lot of power to control in a small, fatty, flexible bit of flesh! (By the way, some people claim the tongue is the most powerful muscle in the human body; figuratively, that is true; but in physical truth, the tongue is composed of eight muscles, which essentially means we have eight times the potential to be devastating verbally.)
